What are some tips for optimizing images on your website?
JPEG for photos, PNG for illustrations - almost always. Only upload to your website images that are the right size for the area they are to be shown in. E.g. if you have space for a product image that's 400px across, you only need a JPG that is 800px across to look good in the space (twice the size for retina screens). Run your images through an optimisation app like ImageOptim which can squeeze in some compression techniques that can reduce file size by up to 50% without losing any quality. Finally, ensure that your HTML is set to lazy load images where possible (<img loading="lazy" ...>). This instructs the browser to defer loading of images that are off-screen until the user scrolls near them.

How can recent graduates create a successful freelancing business?
Learn the basics of bookkeeping and handling your taxes. This is crucial to avoid getting into a financial mess, especially when it's time to complete your tax return at the end of the financial year. Using SaaS accounting software can help you avoid getting tangled in complex spreadsheets and also aids in creating invoices, and with some, accepting online payments. Just watch out for the monthly fees as they can build up.

How can recent graduates create a successful freelancing business?
Charge more than you might initially consider – it's important not to undervalue your skills. If your rates result in earning less than minimum wage, then what's the point? Also, be cautious of clients who offer unpaid work under the guise of benefiting your portfolio. Remember, "free" doesn't cover your living expenses, and clients are aware of this. Often, those who avoid paying for services tend to be the most demanding and time-consuming, making the arrangement even less beneficial for you.

How can recent graduates create a successful freelancing business?
I would suggest that it's beneficial to first gain some work experience in the same or similar industry. This not only gives you a chance to build a professional network, but also provides a practical understanding of how businesses operate and manage client relationships. These insights are invaluable for a freelancer. Having job experience on your CV also demonstrates your employability, countering any perception that freelancing was a fallback option.
